2 questions re diagnosing/replacing clicking hard drive

The 30gb HD on my 5th Gen iPod classic started quietly clicking and now it will not connect , etc. It only shows the apple logo, no menus or folders. I've attempted resetting it, low level formats, 'slapping' it, diagnostics menu, etc. No luck. I have no concerns attempting repairs myself. Q1. How do I determine if it is the HD vs the controller board? Q2. Can I replace the 30gb drive with a 80gb drive to increase storage space?

Thanks

basiladair, from experience I am pretty certain that it is your HDD. but just to ensure it is, I would invest in a Zif-to-USB adapter. (about $5 on ebay) it will allow you to connect your HDD as a external drive. that way you can see if you can still access the drive etc. Also, make sure that you have a good HDD cable.Check for tears and make sure it is inserted straight. A2: The 5th gen drive is interchangeable but beware that the 30GB use a slim drive. So what you need to look out for is the thickness of the drive. There are 5mm and 8mm HDD out there. If you get a thick one, you will require a deeper rear panel, a new head phone jack since the cable has to be longer as well as a new battery for the same reason You will also need the rubber bumpers from the bigger drive as well. There are 160GB ZIF drives that will fit but the bigger the drive the more you are going to pay. I'd get a 80GB for your iPod which is reasonably priced and readily available.

Hope this helps, good luck

Thank you so much for the excellent advice. Very much appreciated. If

you have a recommended vendor for the 5mm, 80 GB HD, it would complete my day. Basil :-)
