Why is my CD-DVD Reader making strange noises and not reading the disc

So my disc reader instead of reading discs, makes a car noise or something and im mad cuz i want to download Windows XP SP3 and the worst part, the disc reader stops working.

Hi @ahdad,

Check if the disc is spinning.

Insert the disc with the writing on the label in a remembered position, attempt to read the disc in the normal manner and when it fails eject the disc and check if the disc has moved position.

If it hasn't moved then because the disc is not spinning it can't be read and the laser lens shuttle is searching back and forth for the TOC (Table of Contents), hence the noise. Faulty drive motor perhaps. It may be cheaper to replace the drive than to try and fix it.

If the disc has moved try cleaning the laser lens using a cd/dvd laser lens cleaning kit (examples only) and check if that resolves the problem
