Charger LED is dim, will not power on.

I was given a Macbook Pro that will not power on. The green LED on the Magsafe charger is very dim when plugged in. I have cleaned the contacts and opened up the charging block. When plugged in the charger is putting out 16.3 volts. I assume it is working. Would a bad DC in board cause this issue, or might it be something else?

This sounds like a logic board issue with the power MOSFETs and/or the power control logic (SMC)

Let’s give this a try disconnect the battery following the first steps in this guide MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2012 Battery Replacement. Now press and hold the power button to fully discharge the logic board.

With the battery still disconnected, plug in the MagSafe charger take note of the cables LED color let us know what you saw. Amber, Green, or not lit, is it dim or bright? Did it change between the colors?

Disconnected battery, held power button, then connected Magsafe. LED turns on very dim green. No change.

@jlaffin - Sadly the MOSFETs are damaged and you’ll need someone with deeper skills to diagnose which ones need replacing and have micro-soldering skills.

I truly think this a still a great system for most people. It’s worth keeping.
