iPod won't power on after screen replacement, even when plugged in

I just replaced the screen on my iPod, tearing the copper tape on the back of the rear camera in the process. When I first tested it, the power button didn't work—but it turned on after I plugged it in and worked fine. I disassembled it and found nothing wrong with the power/volume ribbon cable or anything else. Upon reassembly, it will no longer power on at all, even when plugged in. Any ideas as to what might be going on here?

If you get problems powering up after screen swap, locate the 3 battery terminal beneath the metal cover. Refer to the battery replacement guide to see what the terminal looks like. Find the +3.7 volt terminal using a multimeter (From memory, it's the one on the right as you look at it.), and short this terminal briefly to ground. (The metal plate surrounding the home button will do.) Then, plug the phone into a charger, and within seconds you should get your confirmation beep and the screen should show that the phone is charging. Wait a minute or so, and it will boot up.

This has worked for me on more than a few occasions. I hope it helps

I had the same issue and tried out what Rob suggested. I got it to turn on and the lcd to show a white screen by shorting the rightmost of the three battery terminals and holding the power button down at the same time while plugged into a charger. Didn't seem to work without holding down the power button at the same time.

by

Same problem here...no power after screen swap. I used Robs suggestion (grounded battery terminal) and worked for me! Thanks!!

Rob and Chuck H, how did you ground the battery?

by

RE: Rob and Chuck H, how did you ground the battery?

I used the little screwdriver that came with the kit and touched the solder post on the battery (third one to the right with the home bottom at the bottom) and the metal housing around the home button. I had to try several times but it eventually worked. You can also try holding the sleep button down when attempting this. Good luck!

by

I'm new and I don't know how to reply to someone inside a thread but @rob could you explain your solution to me really simply, how and what do I ground and what should i use?

Here's a tutorial with pics that everyone has been requesting. I've used this method over a dozen times successfully. Good Luck!!

There are 3 small battery terminals (shown below). You only want to touch the one to the far right (circled below). Avoid touching the other 2 terminals!!

So I have the same problem but @Chuck H, I just gave this a shot and it was unplugged and it sparked when I tried, I then plugged it in and tried to turn it on but nothing, another guy told be that there was a short somewhere and it would be really hard to find, any input for me?

== Update ==

@Chuck

Well I tried again several times, triple checked the screen connections, even tried another screen to be sure it was the current one, but it still wont turn on, but your saying that because it sparked its not shorted right? but yeah any other ideas?

by

i just did this and the ipod came on but now it's stuck in recovery mode and it keeps telling me to plug into itunes, i have done all the resets nothing helps

by

@Malti

Sounds like your screen is fixed if you can see the usb cord plugged into itunes. You have a whole different situation going on. You have to put your ipod in DFU mode (Google DFU mode if do not know how to do this) and then plug it into itunes. Your ipod will be restored to the most current firmware from Apple.

@Jon

A spark is normal. I actually will keep contact on the battery terminal and metal until I see a spark. So your ipod is not shorted out.

1) Make sure both connectors from the screen are connected to the ipod.

2) Make sure your battery has some charge and not completely dead.

If both of these are not the problem then ground it again. Sometimes it will take 2-5 tries until it will work. Also, just plug it in and it will boot on its own...no need to hit the home or sleep button.

Good Luck to you both!!

by

@jon

Yes, I am saying that a spark is not an indication of a short. The only other thing I can suggest is to try and reset the ipod. Hold the sleep & home button simultaneously for 10 seconds or until you see the Apple boot logo.

What actually happens is when u don't turn off ur iPod before changing to the new screen the circuit board shuts down. But only temporarily the easiest way to fix this problem is to put it up n let it die Completely. N be patient it will take a while depending on how much ur battery was on and I know it works from experience it happens to me 3 times already my battery was at least at 70 percent and it took from 7pm to at least 4pm for it to die. If it's full wait at least 2 1/5 days then plug it in n it should be charging within seconds if that doesn't work then ground it

so ive been fixing an ipod touch 4th gen and had this exact problem. i replaced the screen. turned it on and got a white screen. turned it off then no matter what i was stuck with a black screen. i tried all the trick above including grounding, hard reset plugging the charger in ect ect ect. nothing worked.

please note that my solution will wipe all of the data and reset the ipod completly.

what i ended up doing was plugging the ipod into the computer. i tuned did not reconise it and the screen remained black, i then put the ipod into dfu mode (power button for 3 seconds, power button and home button for 15 seconds, then the home button for 5 seconds.

itunes then recognised the ipod, note that the screen remained black.

itunes downloaded the latest firmwhere, and began the restore process. the ipod screen remained black until it began to reset. the apple logo with the loading bar appeared and once it was completed th ipod was working again,

I was having this same problem and after messing with it for a few days i finally got it to display a white screen. Before this it would not power on, or be recognized with itunes. I tried the hard reset and it did not work. Tested it with itunes and with the white screen it was recognized. Couldnt get the white screen to go away for the life of me. Until i figured maybe the LCD was bad. Exchanged the LCD for a different one and got the white screen AGAIN... hard reset worked this time (power button and home button til ipod reboots) and it booted up just fine. I think the problem I had with the original no power was just not having a connection sealed all the way. It looks and felt like they were but after taking apart and making sure all connections were snug it finally powered back on. Try connecting it to a wall charge via A/C and see if you get a result doing that.

Have you even read this thread? There are numerous confirmed solutions right here if you read. It's not caused by one single problem.. that's why you have to troubleshoot and find out exactly what it is. It could possibly be a faulty screen, also make sure to double and triple check your connections are secure. Including the camera connections, and inspect all ribbon cables with magnification to make sure none of them have been torn/disconnected from solder points.

Make sure that all cables are plugged in, and that no cables are damaged. If you used a heat gun, it may be possible that you accidentally fried a cable while melting the adhisive.

I may have some useful info for those that aren't having any luck with this process. Prior to trying this I checked the voltage of the battery which was 3.7 volts, fully charged. After following this process without success I found after each spark the battery voltage had dropped to a low 1.0 volt, it would then require me to recharge the battery before I was able to get additional sparks. Is it normal for the volts to drop so low after a spark ???

Update

when taking middle metal frame plate by the power connection on left side of ipod i got a paiter putty knife to slide between the ribbon cable and metal frame. this keeps it from being glude to back of plate. when plate is off i use a small amount of superglue jell tolock down ribbon cable so it doesnt tear when connecting ribbon cable for digitizer

OK brilliant people:

Rob I love how detailed your answer was and I tried it with some success. Here is the whole story:

Replaced the screen with success and everything worked fine, until he went to charge it. Then it wouldn't charge.

I took it apart again and got it to connect to my computer. The screen got damaged so I replaced it again.

When I got it back together it was white. I tried the hard reset and after it turned off it wouldn't turn back on again.

I then tried your grounding trick and got it connected again. Again the new screen was white, so I again tried the hard reset. Same results.

It appears that I can get it to connect, but I can't get a picture. Also if I try to rest the device I lose all connectivity and power.

I have looked close and I don't see any obvious signs of damaged cables, etc.

So anyone have a great answer as to how I should proceed now?

Thanks,

Brian

I had the same problem with 2 ipod 4th generation devices. After replacing the screens I had nothing (black screen). I tried unplugging and reseating the cables and then the screens would power up with a white screen or still do nothing. Did this several times with no luck. I tried shorting the battery (3.7v pin to ground) and this had no effect. I finally plugged them into a computer to see if itunes recognized them and it did. What I discovered was the software was a verstion 5.x.x and iTunes was telling me I needed to update the software. I updated the software on both devices to 6.1.x and then plugged the screens back in. Both powered up with a white screen and I did a reset (home button and power button for 10 seconds) and both devices powered up with no problem.

So I had a second one do this to me. Same as the first. What I didn't know is the answer was here all along, but I didn't understand.

DFU mode is the key, but it will wipe the memory off the device.

Here is how to do it. Plug it into computer with iTunes running. Hold sleep button for 3 seconds, don't let go and add home button, hold both for 10 seconds, then let go of sleep and hold home until you get the dialog that the iPod is in recovery mode. Restore and voila.

On the iOS device the difference between recovery mode and DFU mode is that in recovery you see the connect to iTunes logo and in DFU the screen is blank. (This is useless if you have no picture to begin with.) Here is what I didn't know: on the computer in iTunes the two modes look the same. The other thing I didn't know was that getting it into DFU mode will work if it isn't showing up in iTunes already. It even charges without you knowing it is.

My daughter's iPad mini helped me discover all this. It got locked into recovery mode and while I was trying to get it out I discovered DFU mode by accident. Once I discovered that the two look the same in iTunes I got both iPods back from the dead.

The second one I had to do the steps above a couple times before it worked, but persistence won out. I hope my revelations help someone else. I'm sure some of you are going, duh, but I was educated and am better for it now.

Thanks to all the posts above, they all helped me piece the solution together in my slow brain.

Mary,

Try my steps. One of the two wasn't showing up in iTunes, but it did in DFU mode. If it doesn't work the first time try again. I had to do it several times to get it to connect. Also, I read somewhere that even the smallest tear in a cable can make a different, did you check them all?

Good luck.

Got an email from Andrew. Hey man, if the battery has no charge then the grounding thing is not going to work.

you might try it with the cable hooked up. or leave the thing charging for a long time and then try. it has to have current for that to work.

if there is no way to charge it, it;s possible your battery is dead as can be and you need a new one to get the current. see what I mean?

has to have power source to be able to kick it over.

Black Screen/No Response after screen replacement Fix:

I've read almost every post on this issue because I had the same thing with my ipod 4 until about 5 minutes ago. Here's what I did:

* I was grounded working on aluminum foil

If you're 100% sure you didnt tear any cables etc, and everything is connected correctly, before you 3m tape or adhesive anything:

1. I tried the ground fix of touching one end of a wire to the home button bracket and another to the 3 solder point for the battery. I got a small spark. That insured me i didnt short anything out.

2. connect the ipod to itunes with sync cable. while still plugged in disconnect the screen cable with the plastic tool from my repair kit. Itunes recognized my ipod. (you may need to hit the power button) I plugged the screen cable back in to board, and itunes stated: your ipod is in restore mode, do you want to restore the firmware. I chose yes. Itunes restored the firmware and updated my ipod. after the process was done, my ipod was working again.

Hi all I've been reading this with much interest as I just replaced the screen on my ipod touch and got white screen.

I reset it by pressing sleep and hold and it went off and completely died. Would not charge power up or be recognised by itunes.

So followed Robs advice and shorted battery, yay ipod now powers up to white screen.

Connected to itunes and pressed power button for 3 seconds then while pressing power pressed home as well for 10 seconds and got restore message on itunes.

Now downloading restore software so hopefully this will resolve all issues.

This was the most useful thread I have come across for resolving this issue so massive thanks Rob.

Will update tomorrow once ipod restored and hopefully working again fingers crossed.

I afred of this (maybe the logic board will burn out) and I only put out the middle metal plate (the large, between the LCD and the Battery) Turn on the Ipod in this position, and shows connect to charge.

I plugged it to the PC, and now it's charging and looks working. ;)

I replaced the screen/digitzer on my son's 4th gen Ipod, and nothing happened when I turned it on, so I checked all the connections, and nothing happened.

Today, I tried the battery ground, and the screen came on. Wahoo!

BUT....the touch screen is not responding to touch. I used the voice commands and can play music or use facetime.

What else can I try? The orange ribbon in the upper left corner (that is sitting on a plastic-like pad) was near the site of screen break, and there is some remaining black stickiness in that area. I did remove all the shards and pieces. Should I try to remove this residue? Is this a sensitive area?

Any other way to know if I just got a bad digitizer or if I damaged the Ipod itself?

Just to help you all out, I confirmed that a latest update fixes compatibility on new replacement screens. I was having issues as well with black screen lightly flickering but not powering up, however the oem cracked screen I took off was working. I had 3 screens tested on another ipod touch with ios 6 and all worked, but not with the one that was on ios 5. I updated ipod touch with the cracked oem screen on iTunes to ios 6.1.6 and tested the screens and all worked fine now. The black flickering I can confirm is a ios compatibility with replacement screens.

I recently replaced LCD and digitizer screen on Ipod 4th generation. I got it to power up before I put the heat plate on to make sure it was going to work. I went back to put heat plate on and closed it up and got nothing after that. I thought maybe the batter needed to charge so I plugged it in and got the battery charge sound, but no picture. Itunes does not recognize it when I plug it into computer. Another question I have as well is that there is a white mesh sponge (very little) that you're supposed to transfer from the old screen to the new one that adheses to the bottom of one of the cables. Is this a vital step or can it be left out???

I use to leave that mesh part off of the new screens, but I read somewhere that leaving it off contributed to this problem. Since then I have started to transfer it to the new part. Please help. That LCD connector is so fiddly.
