Replaced Hard Drive, Now not booting

Hi,

I have an old iPod Video 5th Gen, which I got off a friend.

The hard drive needed replacing, as when I got it, I kept getting the sad apple face.

I got a hard drive, and installed it according to instructions on the net.

Now when I try and boot the iPod, nothing happens. It hasn't been used for a good few months, so I'm thinking the battery is completely dead, so at the moment it's plugged into a wall charger and I'm going to leave it there for a couple of hours.

In the meantime I wanted to find out if its something more sinister than just dead battery.

When I hold down MENU and WHEEL button for around 8 seconds, the iPod tries to boot, but instead of showing the Apple logo, it just goes back to the battery charge screen.

It doesn't boot unless plugged into a wall charger or computer USB. I was at one point getting the message to connect to a computer, but that was ONLY through a wall charge, and no USB in a computer was getting to that stage.

Any ideas? I've checked all connections multiple times and everything seems ok.

George, the first thing I would do is to replace the battery. Right now it looks like it is your main problem. The battery may be at the end of its life span, and no longer hold a charge. After you replace the battery, re-evaluate and let us know. When you remove the battery, make sure you move the clip on the connector straight up. The connector has a tendency to easily snap of the logic board. Here is the guide iPod 5th Generation (Video) Battery Replacement the only other thing I started doing when replacing the HDD is to also replace the HDD cable, have had some bad luck with broken cables.

Like oldturkey said replace the HDD cable. I have had those fail on me more often than the hard drive.

Hey guys thanks very much for the replies.

Well, I got the battery, i installed it ok, but now the following is happening, and I don't know what to do about it.

The hardware bit was easy, but the software bit is now causing me problems!

So I do the following:

1) hold menu + centre button for 7 seconds~

2) it loads up apple icon

3) here it either goes two ways - either it shows 'connect to itunes and restore' OR it says 'do not disconnect'

4) so far it looks ok, but what happens now, is iTunes recognises the ipod, but then says 'ipod software is corrupted, try restoring', but when i click ok on this dialog to click restore the iPod is no longer seen.

5) I then disconnect and reset, but then it either goes to 'do not disconnect' and just stalls there, or it goes 'ok to disconnect' and then no further activity takes place.

I'm stumped. Any ideas if this is software or hardware?

Got it working as SOON as i posted that reply! I don't even know what was causing the problem beforehand, but this time, I kept centre + play held when the 'corrupt software' dialog came up, in the hope pressing the buttons would keep it being seen by iTunes. Whether that was what did it or not I couldn't say, but either way, it let me restore, let me install new software and now it works perfectly!
