Does the little black "DO NOT REMOVE" sticker in the bottom right of the iPhone 3G serve any other purpose?

Nope, just a warranty sticker.

Besides telling you not to remove it? No, as Chris Green says, once you remove it, your warranty is invalidated.

it hasn't been under warranty for 4 months now, so thats ok.

It's on top of the antenna wire. if you mess with it you can damage your iphone's signal or worse reflects no service.

Where did you find that information? So by removing the sticker I decrease the signal ;-)?

no.. it's on top of a screw that holds the motherboard in contact with the battery connection. I think your antenna problem is damage elsewhere on that little wing of the motherboard.. it is easy to try to force the motherboard out and the gold prong to the antenna is damaged..
