Cannot adjust volume via Mac keyboard

I am able to successfully connect my BBP to Mac, but the volume buttons on my Mac do not properly adjust volume. The Mac GUI indicates that the volume has been adjusted, but then immediately returns to the original volume. Rapid hits is marginally better, with the volume adjusting after dozens of fast taps, and vol + is better than vol -. It's as if the BBP is saying "no" in response to every vol +/- input it receives, much like a petulant child. Similarly, holding the vol +/- key occasionally works after a long wait.

I verified that other bluetooth speakers function properly, including volume control.

I also verified that volume can be controlled using the volume slider in Control Center. Just wondering how to get keyboard volume buttons to communicate properly with BBP. TIA!
