Why is my tablet not recharging?

My tablet isn't recharging. When plugged into a USB port, it runs without drawing down the battery but doesn't charge the battery. It shows a red X on the battery status icon.

Mary Frase this behaves and sounds like a bad depleted battery. Let us know what tablet you have. Your title inquires about a Nook, but you chose a Samsung Tab as the device. Until we know for sure, we cannot guide you regarding a battery change.

Update (12/12/2022)

Mary Frase perfect. Use this guide Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0 Battery Replacement to change your battery. After that re-evaluate.

Either a bad battery or it needs a new charge port fitted. First try opening it and disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. Then plug it in and see if it charges. Could be software issue. Also you mentioned plugging it into a usb port. Try a dedicated 2 amp charger.
