Something hit my computer. What can be damaged?

Hi everybody,

I accidentally dropped a heavy object on the housing of my computer, about two inches right of the touchpad. There is a small dent there now.

The computer directly started black screening and beeping loudly, this is a sign of RAM problems right? I turned it off and rebooted. Went allright but now I can barely multitask and programs (e.g. openoffice) will not start up (I have a error report of this in case that would help).

I also hear some sounds at the location of the dent now, is the harddisk there?

Would getting new memory be worth the try?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes,

Ruben

The hard drive is on the front right side and the ram slots in the center just over the battery. I would remove the bottom plate and take a look at the hard drive. You can also reseat the memory sticks in their sockets.

There's a real possibility of hard disk damage if it was spinning when the shock occured.

Thanks lemerise,

Yes, harddtive damage seems likely..

I did a memorytest with memtest program, that didn't find any problems.

A program to check the harddrive (Smartreporter) does report a lot of errors. The location of the noise and dent is also exactly the one you describe. The mac systemtest did not complete but was stuck somewhere in the end, perhaps because it is on the harddrive?

Seems like I need to try a new harddrive.. how straightforward is replacing this? I prefer having it done properly then to get more problems.

Thanks again for the quick reply!

Dear Lemerise and people form ifixit,

It worked, got the tools and replaced the harddrive (very simple!) and it works perfectly again (even a bit faster because I got a 7200 rpm harddrive :)

I'm really happy with it, thanks again for the help, I love this website!
