Thousands of files dumped on the desktop!

I was moving a bunch of files {a couple thousand} from one folder to another on my desktop and my finger slipped and dumped them on the desktop instead of the folder. Now my trackpad is frozen and I can't see any of the files. However if I connect a corded mouse I can move the curser and navigate. I can see the files when I go to the desktop folder but not on the desktop itself. I can't open any of those files that got dumped cause it says they are part of the system software. I tried reinstalling the running software but the drive ejects the disc. I hooked up the computer in target mode to another computer and tried that way but the target icon does'nt show up on the other computer. Any Ideas?

I would try to boot the machine from an external volume to settle the situation or remove the HD from your PB, install it in an external case et mount it on another mac.
