Screen smashed, drive wiped, no recovery partition, how do I proceed?

Hey All! Been a while, hope everyone is doing well!

I have a question that's been driving me nuts: 2020 MacBook Pro, unusable smashed screen, has been wiped and reset via Configurator 2 and does not have recovery partition. Will not boot to external because of default setting in T2 security utility, and target mode won't work for the same reason. I can't get an external display because the initial WIFI prompt for internet recovery mode does not display externally. Laptop is not activation locked.

Without a new screen, does anyone know how to get an OS on it, or get something on an external display that would let me move forward?

Thanks!

John

Ouch! That’s a killer! Other than getting a workable display assembly connected I can’t even see how you can proceed. It the system is iCloud locked then you are really stuck.

Sorry I have no answers for you 😞

@danj Hey Dan, how's it going? Yeah, I figured I'm probably stuck. :-( It was dumb of me to reset it in configurator, I forgot that would leave me without recovery partition

@rdklinc - do you have access to the original owner? At least get them to pull the system from there account. Then getting a (used display) so you can then hand it to Apple with the proof of ownership (copy of the original sales receipt if the owners name is on it get a copy of their ID too).

Hi,

Here are a few suggestions I would have for you,

  1. Ethernet: So I would suggest that you would use internet recovery on an external display but instead of using Wi-Fi, I would try to use ethernet if it is available to you. You would need a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter to do this.
  2. New Screen: Another option for you would be to replace the screen on your MacBook if you are able to so you are able to access Wi-Fi via your actual screen.
  3. Bypass T2 Security Utility: I don't know how well this will work but here is something that might be worth checking out of you are still stuck.

  4. Other: Here is another link the might have some answers on it for you.

I hope some of these things help you and let me know if they do or don't.

Thanks,

Brilliant thinking -- ethernet did it!!! Ethernet removes the need to enter wifi info on the built-in screen, so it then goes to internet recovery, which eventually pops up on the external! Very cool, I have a whole pile of smashed-screen 2020s that I can move forward with. I had to use an ethernet to thunderbolt and connect that to a thunderbolt to usb-c, but it worked! Thanks again! You'd think Apple would just have all video project to external, but oh well. At least there is this solution. Sad thing is that majority of people are never going to find this solution, and their laptops are going to suffer because of that.
