iPhone xr keeps shutting off every now and then after water damage

My phone got water damaged mysteriously this august when i left it at a friends house to charge. Now i must say it was water damaged a week before that due to it being in a wet backpack (which i already found wierd cuz how does an xr break after being in wet backpack for like 10 mins???). I got it repaired by just replacing the screen but one week later there was water under the screen again so i think the shop didn't remove all of the water or something or maybe maybe my friend dropped it in water and doesn't dare to tell which i doubt is the case. So i repaired the screen again in like september and everything works fine now but every now and then (most often when having a low battery and never when its on the charger) my phone randomly shuts off and then it just turns on again. Some mornings it will shut down every few minutes and sometimes i dont have an issue for days. How can i fix this?

Hi,

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is the ifixit iPhone XR guide that may help

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

I will do that but just in case what happens when i don't clean the phone from the inside?

@Everything and Nothing

It will continue to corrode and cause more problems as time goes by.

Okay i'll def look into it i'm Dutch and my nearest phone shop offers a water damage repair they cite it as (translated): "The Repair House uses the highest quality supersonic machine for all water damaged telephones. When you walk in, our machine will make sure your phone is completely spotless again." Do you think that covers the cleaning you described and stops the corrosion? Thanks for all of your help so far!

@Everything and Nothing

It lost a bit in the translation ;-) but essentially what they will do should work as long as the damage so far is not that bad.

What is actually used is known as an ultrasonic cleaner. (best explanantion I could find at short notice)

This type of cleaning has long been used for cleaning metals and jewelry etc and with the correct solvents in the tank is now being used for electronic devices.

By getting it thoroughly cleaned as soon as possible you are maximizing the chances that it will work OK again. Although there's always a chance that if there was damage that it is beyond fixing by cleaning alone there may be problems afterwards and maybe a component part in the phone might have to be replaced, but it's a necessary first step. If you know that it is clean then if there are problems then it's not due to corrosion causing it now although it may have started it before

I really dont know what i should do. Should i just see how long this phone will last, Should just stop investing in this one and buy a new phone for atleast 350 euros, or should i do a 35 euro cleaning and hope that it will stop shutting down and keep on working for a few years.
