Keyboard and trackpad aren't working-pulled from a differnet mac

Hello,

I just installed an upper case from a different MacBook to my current one, but neither the keyboard nor the trackpad work. I'm pretty sure the keyboard and trackpad worked fine on the MacBook it was previously on, but only the power button works when it is installed on the different MacBook. The upper case should be the same for both Macbooks (both the Core 2 Duo). I thought it could be a software issue, but the keys don't work even when I first turn the MacBook on (so I've been unable to reset the PRAM.) I tried an external mouse and it does work. I checked the internal cable and connection and they seem to be fine. Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

Why are you replacing the upper case, to begin with? Has either experienced liquid damage? Please tell us more about the history of the machine.

Hey again. :)

The MacBook I am trying to install the upper case on: I received it because the backlight reportedly failed, no upper case came with it. I confirmed this. Replaced the screen without a problem, boots fine. Installed an upper case from a different MacBook (also an A1181). Didn't work (except the power button).

The upper case came from a MacBook that experianced a logic board failure (a video issue), no water damage occured to the MacBook.

I would double check the cable connection on both the upper case and logic board, also inspect the cable for obvious damage. Many times the damage is not obvious on those thin, delicate, ribbon cables. I would suggest replacing the cable if the keyboard is not working and you are sure that it has been properly attached on both ends. Click here for one place to purchase the cable. You might be better off buying a known good used upper case with cable (with a warranty) to ensure that you have known good parts. Unless you are the original owner (or know the previous owner real well) of the laptop you pulled the upper case from you can't be sure that there is no liquid damage, only that there are no visible signs of liquid damage.

I would also inspect the solder joints of the socket/header for the cable on the logic board, also for any bent contacts in it. The keyboard and track pad on these emulate USB and are piggybacked into the USB channels. The connector itself is just 2 funny looking USB ports.
