volume control and tapic response - odd behavior

my phone is exhibiting some weird behavior. when i hold down the up or down volume to go to max or min volume, i can feel the taptic engine thumping away. once i hit max or min and continue in that direction, i also feel a thump. if i do a volume change one increment at a time (there are 16 of them), there's no feedback.

none of my other iphones (7 or otherwise) give me taptic feedback with volume changes. i've been inside and disconnected and reconnected all the flex cables, even swapped out the taptic engine.

any thoughts?

Hi B C,

My first suggestion is to try software solutions first. The things that come to mind would be to do a hard reset on the phone, try the Reset All Settings option in Settings, update to the latest iOS version, and finally try a full backup then wipe the phone and restore it.

macReports has an article on iPhone System Haptics that has this to say about haptics and the volume button.

Volume slider: Your iPhone has volume up and down buttons. You can use these buttons to control the volume. You will get subtle taps when you turning up or down the volume.

If none of that does the trick and it is indeed a hardware problem, then the only replaceable part you have left to try is the lightning cable assembly. The Taptic engine connects to the logic board through that flex cable and since you've already tried replacing the Taptic engine, that only leaves the flex cable as a possible source of problems.

I have heard that some Taptic Engines lose functionality when replaced unless data from the old engine is copied and rewritten to the replacement, but since your issue started before you replaced it, that wouldn't seem likely as the cause of your problems.

Good luck; let us know what you find.

hi JW.

appreciate the insight.

i have not tried any of the software suggestions yet, but i will.

i will not try the IOS upgrade for the reason that this has a after-market home button. it functions normally, except the Touch ID, meaning it does not use bluetooth or require soldering. on another iphone 7, also with an after-market button, upgrading to 15.6 turns on this annoying feature that turns on the assistive touch on-screen home button whether i want it or not, at the most inopportune time.

regarding the volume slider quote above, i don't get those subtle (or overt) taps on any other iphone i have (but maybe there's away to turn that feature off - i'll look into it).

if only the charging port flex cable assembly was not such a PITA to replace,

do you know if it's absolutely critical to use the underside adhesive to attach it to the case bottom?

@beekerc The last time I did a lightning port replacement, I used some standard glue to hold down the flex cable, but other comments on here indicate that it's not a hard and fast rule, since everything is going to get locked down when you put in the taptic engine and speaker.

That said, you'll notice there is some silvery adhesive in some parts; I interpreted that to mean it's providing a ground path to the case, so I felt like it was probably a good idea to maintain that connection. I bought some conductive adhesive for those parts and used it there; so far everything seems to be working well. Here's what I bought.

@beekerc Oh, and regarding the wipe and restore option, I don't have details, but I do know it is possible to specify the update file that's used when you do a full restore, so I'm fairly sure you can pick a particular version you want and use that to do the restore so you don't end up with those issues you mentioned. I'll have to leave it to more experienced members here to provide information, as I'm not an expert in that area.

@dadibrokeit I'll check it out. btw, once you open the tip of one of the syringes, does it harden up in the needle (like say a tube lf caulk), or does it stay dispensable for a while?

by

I've only used it once so it's hardly a statistical sample, but I just checked and the one I opened 3 months ago still dispenses fine, so looks like it's not as bad as caulk in that respect.
