Is this a necessary component?

I think so, because when the battery charges, it heats up. The pad takes the heat and via the body transfers it out of the case.....

do you mean on back of motherboard or on inside of rear case???

Inside of rear case behind battery....

The copper helps dissipate heat, like a heatsink. When I work on iPod's, for example the touch 4g, I also add a dab of arctic silver paste since the paste is usually dried up.

You can find adhesive backed copper sheets, just cut to fit, google :

copper foil sheet
