iMac freezes at password entry

I have an older  27” imac  running Majouve 10.14.6.

It  has 32 MB of memory.

It has run flawlessly since new.

A few days ago, whenever I moved the pointer, I got the Beachball for a few minutes. This only got worse. Then when I restarted it,  It gets to the password request – when I enter (and I know that I am entering the correct one) it freezes. But it doesn’t shake , like it does when a wrong password is entered.

Are there any suggestions as to the cause ?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

What is your drive config? HDD, SSD or Fusion Drive. What is the size/s of the drive/s internally.

Some info about the specific model would be helpful as well as the type of storage drive in it (if you don't know the capacity and what model it is can help pin that down.

Shut down your Mac, then start it over. Immediately press and hold Option, Command, P, and R. Then you can release the keys in about 20 seconds. After your Mac successfully reboots, you can open System Preferences and adjust any settings that were reset.

@willjoe - Resetting the NVRAM won't help here.
