Is it possible to just replace the SSD, to a 1TB or 2TB NVMe SSD?

I have a similar question. I'm worried that my fusion drive may eventually have issues on the rotating media HD. Is it possible to just replace the SSD, to a large (1TB or 2TB) NVMe SSD with a pin adapter and reformat the existing HD to be used as a JBOD partition? In other words, can the PCIe SSD act as a stand alone drive instead of the original Fusion configuration?

Answer this question I have this problem too

The original post was a 2012 system which has two SATA ports. It doesn't offer a PCIe/NVMe port or a way to add it. Replace fusion drive with a single SSD

If you have a 2014 system you have the ability to install a custom Apple or OWC PCIe/NVMe drive.
