Why did my CD Rom sudenly stop working? Can it be fixed?
Why does 'My Computer' not recognize my CD ROM? Any way to go round that problem?

This MS Support KB may be of some help to you. Also look at the HP Support Article. It seems this problem is somewhat common!
If the drive is actually faulty THIS MANUAL will assist in disassembly specifically section 5.9

Can the BIOS see it? If it can be seen in the BIOS it most likely is not a hardware problem.
