Can anyone point me to guides for repairing USB ports, and screen?

I used to be pretty good with electronic repair back in my Army days. Now it's been more than a decade, and I'd like to try my hand at fixing my laptop.

3 of the USB ports have the little plastic support absent. I'd like to repair each of them. I'm doing some other general sprucing while I'm in here, like dust removal, replace batteries, etc. Maybe if suggestions about best maintenance practices, or maybe even upgrades would be most welcome.

The screen is also flickering and discolored on one side, indicating a screen replacement, or maybe just a part of the screen assembly. I suppose I'll see once I get in there, see what's going on, and diagnose my potential to fix by myself.

I presume I'll get my soldering iron, anti-static mat, and desk stands out. Maybe I won't need them though? Thank you so much for your suggestions, info, and time.

Hi @sepulther

Here's some info that may help.

Two of the USB ports are mounted on a separate pcb board (Asus part #90R-N56US1000Y) so at least they will be easy to replace - simply replace the board. The others are mounted on the motherboard so it will have to be removed so that the port can be removed and replaced. Here's a Asus G74SX teardown video that may help. You will need smd soldering skills to remove/replace the port on the motherboard - there are videos on YouTube that show how to do this.

Here's a Asus G74SX screen replacement video that shows how to replace the screen.

There are 3 different screens available for the G74SX model:

If you have a G74SX-BBK8 model then the screen is Asus part # 18G241730601Q Asus LCD TFT17.3' HD+ GLARE LED(A+) i.e. 1600 x 900 resolution

If you have another G74SX variant then it could be the one above or either of the two listed below:

Asus part # 18G241730120Q Asus LCD TFT 17.3' FHD LED (A+) i.e. 1920 x 1080 resolution

Asus part # 18G241730311Q Asus LCD TFT17.3' FHD GLARE LED(A+) i.e. 1920 x 1080 resolution

If you wish to verify what type of screen you have, the part number can sometimes be found on the back of the LCD panel itself.

If the LVDS cable is the cause of the problem i.e. loose connection or damaged where it passes through the hinge to get from the motherboard to the display, I've found 5 part numbers applicable to your model but they may be dependent on the screen type.

Asus part #14G140348000 & 14G140348020 (G74 3D LVDS cable)

Asus part # 14G140348200, 14G140348210 & 14G140348220 (G74 LVDS cable - 14G140348210 & 14G140348220 are interchangeable).

Usually the part number for the cable can be found printed on the cable itself.

Search online using the Asus part number only to get results for suppliers that suit you best.
