whi is my iPod clicking

hi how are you i have an ipod classic that started of with a red x but now it seems to make loud clicking. Its almost like a tapping sound for around 5 seconds and then a very loud clonk at the end like somthing hits the inside cover and stops iv tryed reset and going into manual hdd but it says " error can not open" could this be a loose cable to the hard drive or would the hard drive be faulty thanks kind regards andrew

andrew, from your order of events I am certain that it is your hard drive that needs to be replaced. The number one cause is the heads banging into the head stop. So, I would replace the HDD and the cable. Not a bad job and not terribly difficult. iPod Classic Hard Drive Replacement
