Why is phone overheating and won't start after changing battery?

I replaced the battery on my phone with what looks like OEM spec battery 616-0435. This is jailbroken with Greenpois0n at OS 4.2.1.

All went well except that the instructions that came with it didn't mention pull the screw and clip for the camera, so reinstalling the motherboard and getting the camera re-connected was difficult and the first time (before I learned to remove the camera with the motherboard, the connector probably wasn't fully or properly seated. Initially the phone wouldn't power on, so I connected to wall charger. At the point the Apple / then Greenpois0n icons came on and then eventually it went into emergency mode with the graphic on the screen showing me to link to iTunes.

I tried this, but iTunes never found the phone. After disassembling and rechecking all connections a couple of time, I hooked it back up to power, but nothing happened, then I noticed that the phone started getting hot as it charged. I switched back to the old battery (which was functional, but losing it's steam). Same result (no power-on and overheating). Any ideas?

Randy,

over heating is a classic sign of a short, at least for the problems seen in this community. A phone can get warm when under use, that's just circuitry building heat from pushing power through it. A phone heating up while charging is BAD. Lithium chemistry batteries should not change temperature during charging (unlike NiCd or Nimh which will heat up as they are charged). Disassemble all the way and as you re-assemble, be sure everything aligns correctly and that there is no debris that might be bridging contacts.

Not sure if the instructions you are referring to are talking about instructions that came with the battery...but try out our guide. Good instructions and an abundance of pictures should hopefully help you place all parts correctly.

Phillip... thanks for the advice. Could the short be an improperly seated ribbon connector? Or possible the antenna tab near the battery connector touching the basil?

Phillip... I've been through it twice now and thoroughly cleaned everything with compressed air. Can't see where anything could be bridging, although the little clip that holds the camera on touches the bezel. Everything is back together in the proper order. Still heats up and doesn't come on. I have noticed that the ribbon cable for 5 touches the ribbon on the back side of the audio jack box, but that's the way it would have been in the original installation, I think.

I am having the same problem. I have a 3G that just shut off and battery started getting heated and it never turned back on. I ordered a new OEM battery cause I thought that was the problem but as soon as I dropped it in and put the board on it it started heating up without even connecting the screen on it, it never turned on after assembled and still heats up. Can this be fixed? What is the problem?
