Speaker and vibrate not working

I followed your awesome guide to replace the power button - worked well and nearly perfect

however...

Now the external speaker and vibrate unit are not working. Mute button functions fine - tested with headphones and icon shown screen. Volume button also tested successfully in a similar way. I've tried a soft reset but I suspect this is a loose connection or I've broken a ribbon somewhere. Both of these worked fine before I took it apart.

Any suggestions? I've taken the phone apart a dozen times now and only aiming to fix for trade in but it's also fun so would like to resolve.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Andy, our usual suggestions for cases like this are connector cleaning and inspection. Take your phone apart one last time and as you reassemble pay special attention to the connectors. Inspect the connectors for bent/broken pins or dirty sockets. Remember that these are very small pins, so even the tiniest pieces of debris can cause a part to not function properly! Use rubbing alcohol (at least 80%) to clean contacts as you go and just be really sure that the connectors are fully seated. Don't read this to mean excessive force.

This usually resolves peoples issues. If you find something funny let us know and we'll help as best as we can. Good luck!

Wow thanks for the quick response. I've tried that generally but can you tell me which connectors specifically relate to the speaker and vibrator - are they the same one or different? I will try it again - for sure there was a lot of gunk in it after two years use!

the 3GS vibrator is nothing more than the contact pins on the motor. I would check to make sure those pins aren't bent (or rather bent incorrectly) or the logic board contacts aren't dirty...my bet would be bent pins. for the speakers, it should just be the cable directly associated with it. For example the speakers down on bottom have connector #7. Just trace the wires and you should be able to find what you need!

Vibrating motor now working - contacts had been bent too low to connect. Still struggling with speaker tho....
