Broken IR Sensor Broken

Hello, I was trying to install an SSD in to my late 2012 Mac mini using the ifixit guide. However I was cheating and not taking the logic board out. I could not seat the ssd hard drive at all, so I decided to try and take the logic board out - not realising you need a tool to take the board out. However I started by taking the IR sensor out, but I think I have broken it off the logic board. Is this sensor essential? Does anyone have any tips if I can still install the hard drive to fit in properly?

Also I found a ‘Y’ shaped bracket under the hard drive. Would you know what it’s for?

Thanks in advance.

Update (04/11/2022)

Hello everyone, just an update on the Mac mini - I got the IR sensor soldered, the Mac booted up fine. When I tried to install a fresh copy of Catalina the ssd was not visible. Also I don’t think Bluetooth was working. I took the Mac back the person who soldered the cable, to see what the problem was. He said the cable connecting the ssd to the motherboard may be broken and the Bluetooth cable could be broken too -he would have a look. Went back today and he hadn’t been able to fix it. When the ssd is screwed to the grill on the bottom it disconnects the cable from the motherboard. Does anyone have any idea how I can stop this? Do I need to get a new cable? Thanks

Answer this question I have this problem too

Well, it only looks like you yanked the board connector off the logic board. The cable connector appears to be just fine!

You'll need to resolder the connector back down. Fully remove the logic board and pull the drive tray out so you can inspect the cable held within it and carefully remove the board connector from the cable connector. You'll also want to inspect the pads which your images hide to make sure they are still present. Then its just a matter of resoldering the connector back down (make sure you make note which way it goes!

The metal piece you found is the slide latch which holds the AC outlet. Review Step 20 in this guide Mac mini Late 2012 Outer Case Replacement and reference Step 24 on how to remove the drive tray

Hi there, thanks for the reply. I’ve never soldered anything in my life, so I might need to put in for repair. I tried Apple, they sent details for a company that could repair it, but it is classed as vintage now so they won’t touch it. I will try the local shop that fixes computers and phones. Once again thanks.

@Cannaefixamac - Its in a tight space, so not the best job for a first time. Show them your pictures this is not hard for someone with some skills and the correct tools to fix.

Make a tool with a wire coat hanger and some pliers. Easy.
