Thanks, the home button reacts now, in other words, the screen lights up. Its just strips of color varying from white to blue to red and orange, then quickly goes off as expected when you don't give a command like the slide to unlock option. I am now wondering if the replacements selling for a lot less on ebay and other vendors is a reliable source. I'll be spending almost $200 through iFixit and about $50 elsewhere. I've forked out big bucks for replacement from iFixit with no regrets... this one, is iffy if it will work. I think it will but wonder what else could be broken. Like the speaker, , mic, and other nearby parts. Again thanks for the tip... iTunes 9.2 in my old tower would not recognize anything, I'll try it on my laptop perhpas better luck with version 10.x.

Don't see any other way to proceed other than what you suggest... Complete new LCD/digitizer and then you'll be able to evaluate the damage. You'll be able to see any major cracks etc when you open it. A good sign would be to see if iTunes still recognizes the phone or if vibrate works when connected.
