The iphone has suspected water damage. A friend brought the phone to me several months after the incident. The phone seemed to operate, but started to get really warm near the side/motherboard. The battery drains quickly, and will not hold a charge. The heat seems concentrated on the motherboard. I appreciate any and all help!

Ronald Viramontes, sounds like corrosion/bad battery issues. Use this guide to clean your phone and these guides to work on your phone. Re-evaluate after and see what it does. I suggest you definitely replace your battery. Hope this helps, good luck.

I tried the battery replacement, but the phone continues to get hot where the battery connects to the board. I cleaned the board completely with an alcohol based cleaner. When the battery is removed and the phone is connected to AC power, the phone will operate appropriately without the overheating issue. Any other thoughts?
It still sounds like a battery overheating issue. You might want to try a different battery, talk to the vendor where you purchased your battery from. I do not think that it is the power management IC. Does your battery charge and how hot does it get? You said an "alcohol based cleaner", what percentage alcohol did it have and what else is in the cleaner.?
