CD/DVD rom disk drive rejects disks

Out of nowhere, my MacBook just stopped accepting disks, both cds and dvds. I'll put a disk into the drive, and it will make noises like it's attempting to read it. It does this in a cycle of three, like it's trying three different times to read the disk. And then, after the third attempt, it just spits the disk back out, rejects it. The disk doesn't get stuck in the drive, on the contrary, it never stays in. Is there any way that I can fix this myself, or is my disk drive just fried? I don't think I did anything to it to make it stop working, it just stopped one day.

If you need a replacement drive we will need your exact model. Take the battery out and look on the identification plate on the inside. There should be a A1XXX number, the GHz number, if it's 13", 15", or 17" machine and a EMC#. Thanks so much

You might try a lens cleaner disk. It may clear your problem. If not you may have a bad drive. You can probably get the cleaner disk at Wal Mart or Radio Shack. Good luck. Ralph

A Lens cleaner would be my first recommendation like RJ wrote, and if a clean install of OS doesn't help, I would try reseting the PRAM and PMU. And, if all else fails, you might need a new drive:

Don't know the exact model you have but you can search here for the optical drive you need.

From my experiences, the optical drive on the plastic MacBooks (I don't know about the late 2009 version) has a tendency to go bad. This is due to its placement at the edge- if you pick the laptop up with one hand on the right side, you can damage the drive somehow. I've dealt with 4 MacBooks of your type, each with a bad optical drive. Usually, it's because it's been damaged through being picked up there.

heh, i dont think, you can get it to stay...

i once got a cleaning disk with one of the Mozarts symphonies... as it was audio disk, it got played in my cd player. however, any computer drive have rejected disk. even so, it still does the job.

also, it depends on if it is a "dry" cleaning disk, or "wet" disk...
