Am I calibrating my new laptop battery correctly?

So I recently got a new laptop battery from iFixit (an aftermarket battery, since the OEM ones were out of stock) and was able to replace it.

I charged the laptop to 100% & left it plugged in overnight, and then when I was draining the battery, my laptop ended up completely shutting off with no warning when my battery showed 40%. Plugged it in, turned it back on, the battery percent showed 1%, so I charged it back to 100% again -- I actually witnessed the battery percentage jump from 60% to 100% during this charge. This time around (2nd discharge, my laptop died again, no warning whatsoever, at 30%, and now I'm charging up again for a 3rd time.

Is this normal? I don't even get any low battery warnings before the sudden shutdowns, but at the same time, the battery time I'm getting off this battery is WAY longer than with my old battery even with the random shutdowns. Should I be worried, or are these random shutdowns part of the calibration process? If they are normal, how much longer will it take for my battery to start acting "normal" (like going into battery saver mode at 20%, then warnings at 10% and 5% before dying)

Answer this question I have this problem too

Hi Sri,

Sounds like you're at least on the right track! Just to double check, head over to our help documentation and read the part about battery calibration. If this still doesn't work, email support@ifixit.com and our customer service team will be able to help you troubleshoot your problem.

Good luck!

Thank you Amber! My main concern was that with both recharges, my laptop shut down with no warning at all, is that normal for the first few charges on a new battery? How long would it take for the battery to be calibrated? (I replaced it about 24 hours ago, at this point)

by

@Sri I'm not sure I'd call it normal–it's not what I've seen in the past, anecdotally, but that's out of the scope of what I do here at iFixit. =]

The length of time to calibrate depends on the device. Our guidelines say to charge to 100% + 2 hours, so it really varies. I think the biggest thing I see is that people don't let their new battery drain completely (until the device goes to sleep due to low battery and then waiting 5 more hours) before plugging it in to charge back to 100%.

by

@amber ah, I missed the part about waiting 5 hours -- I didn't actually do that. I'll do it next time my battery drains and see if that helps.

by

Start from the beginning just to cover your bases: wait until it dies, charge to 100%+2 hours, drain to sleep/dead battery+5 more hours, charge to 100.
