Wifi no longer works, New program has taken over(Config Free).

Received a used Toshiba satelite A105. Was working fine for a while. Has XP as the OS on it. When i first had it it was connecting to WIFI via the regular network manager. My fiance had the laptop for a week away from home. Now that its back it will not connect via the network adapter. There seems to be a software controlling the adapter now. When i try to use the software to connect to the internet it will not, stating there's errors. Im totally unsure how this software ( config free) just one day decided to take controll of the WIFI hardware. When i try to use the regular xp WiFi network manager it says that it cannot be done because another software (config free) is managing that connection. Every time i try to uninstall the software ( config free) it does not allow it. Just wondering how to go about it? Or what can be done to fix it.

Another thing you could try is finding a restore point from before she left with the computer and restoring to that point.

Thanks but this step was my first when i found out the problem existed. Sadly it will not allow me to simply uninstall it this way. Seems to me files are corrupted and such.

Mike,

If your desire is to uninstall Config Free, restart your computer, and when the computer begins booting press F8. This will bring up a boot menu and you can start the computer in "safe mode" which should prevent Config Free from starting with the OS. Then you should be able to remove it without an issue and you can get back to your old uninterrupted WiFi setup! Hope this helps and let us know what happens.

Do i have to do just Safe Mode. There is also Safemode with networking and another safe mode option... When i select regular Safe Mode it shows all the drivers loading but hasnt gotten past black screen with list of all the Drivers and such. Not sure if i should try to wait it out or try a different option?

I remember safe mode in XP taking a bit of time. I would say regular safe mode SHOULD do what you need...but honestly it's been a while since I've had to safe mode on XP.

Same here its been quite a long time since dealing with XP wich is why i had to post up on here. If you have any knowledge of apple comps i have another question id appreciate if you looked at. Having issues with a certain little powerbook g4. As for the satelite, let the waiting begin, haha. Will let you know if i can get it going.

I am personally not super mac savvy. We have tons of people in this websites community that are though. Just post up another question and I'm sure that someone will have an idea within a day or two!

PS- I definitely don't remember safe mode taking this long to fire up. You may consider trying another restart, maybe doing a regular reboot to let things recover and then doing a second attempt at safe mode.

With XP in normal mode, hit "Start" -> "Run" -> type "msconfig" -> Tab "Services" -> find "ConfigFree service" -> and take off the "v" on most left. -> click "Apply" -> restart computer -> remember that if you and your fiance have separate log in profiles, it may have to be done from the profile that installed it, or the Administrator one. I had previously done this, When i try to apply the changes it says that i need to do it from an admin account, I am logged onto the only account on the laptop wich is the admin account. ?? ay yi yi

Check on here, it gives you a couple of options http://windowsxp.mvps.org/admins.htm also check by going to Control Panel->User Accounts and there select your account and see if you have administrative privileges. I also re-read the above comments and suggestion form Phillip still stands, have you tried regular Safe Mode? It should bring up The administrator tab as well.

Yes ive tried regular safe mode, it gets to the black screen and tons of drivers start to populate the page... but once it stop populating it just stays on that screen, i let it stand there for 20 minutes and it wont go past it, when i try to log on to safe mode with networking it gets past that black screen with driver text but will not load desktop or anything else.

Okay sounds like a corrupted registry system file, I would boot form your XP CD to the Repair concel and run a dskchk /r Have you checked on your user privileges?

thats what i was thinking corrupted files... ii currently dont have an XP cd but once i get one i will try.
