The Lenovo ThinkPad T460p was a professional laptop released in 2016. It has an i5/i7 6th generation (Skylake) CPU, and had options for a NVIDIA GeForce 940MX GPU. It's model numbers are 20FW and 20FX.

Keyboard randomly stops working and mouse scroll also gets buggy

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad t460p whoose keyboard randomly stops working after startup and touchpad scroll also works with delay when keyboard stops working but keypad mouse works just fine,

When this problem arrives and i try to restart the laptop or even shut it down, the laptop goes to “Shutting down” screen of windows and after some time screen turns off but the laptop does not shuts down and even if i keep pressing the power button for 20 seconds it does not shuts down unless i have to take out the battery and put it back again…

One thing is that all these problems happens only when keyboard stops working and this happens randomly like after 3 hours or after 15 mins like it can take random time to stop working and another thing is that if i put the laptop without any use like for 2 days this issue will come after longer time like 2 3 hours of use but once the issue starts and i reatart the laptop then it keeps coming much faster…

One More thing to mention is that the laptop some time gets the blue screen error too saying “Device power state faliure” when this keyboard problem happens…

I checked the laptop in a repair shop and they told me that its internal keyboard and trackpad (mouse) has no issues it could be some bios or motherboard issue but hey couldn't figure it out, and i also installed fresh windows to see if the problem remains but it also didn't helped….

I would be really grateful for the help…

Answer this question I have this problem too

Sounds like a possible overheating issue as you say it happens after a few hours.

Try blowing the dust out through the cooling vents or if you feel up to it open the case for a more thorough clean. Do NOT touch any internal parts unless you know what you are doing. Electro static energy discharge can damage delicate electronic parts.

Enter your serial number or click “Detect Product” button to access the Hardware Maintenance Manual here:

The problem is not with the keyboard and trackpad because i checked them from a laptop repair shop,

The problem is that they can not diagnos the main problem so they dont repair it for me because they say that it takes a lot of time to check my laptop as the problem dont appear continuosly

Hi @Touseef Ahmed

Have you downloaded the manual as suggested above and read through it?

Have you run the Lenovo Diagnostics yet? I don't think you mentioned the results.

The Lenovo diagnostics can be launched by pressing F10 during the boot sequence. You can select Lenovo Diagnostics by pressing Enter after selecting the Application Menu and arrowing down to Lenovo Diagnostics.

Have you updated the BIOS?

Try to get an external mouse and keyboard and see if there are any driver updates.

This sounds like a hardware issue, from what you state. The buggy kb/mouse... The repair shop said they would be fine, but even if everyone you ask says its fine, replace it if it's causing issues for you.

With the device state power issue, I would recommend either swapping the motherboard, or swapping your PSU. A T470p motherboard will work with a T460p, but it is advised to buy a dGPU heatsink assembly, as I'm personally not sure if the T470p released without a dGPU. It's a 940MX, though, so it will be fine for light gaming. No AAA titles past... 2013, I'd say, though... Anything not meant for a GT 1030/HD 7770 perfomance level will probably not work well.
