Will Not Boot (w/wo battery), No Chime

At boot w/ or w/o battery, hard drive starts to spin, then stops, fan continues to blow, no chime.

On repeated attempts, power cord light changes from green to orange, fan starts then stops.

Sort of sounds like I do before coffee in the morning.

Is anything on the screen, i.e. is it completely black, or does it light up?

The change of the AC adapter color without a battery installed could indicate that the AC adapter is bad, or that DC-in is bad. You might try a different AC if you have one available, and see if the color change occurs with the other AC.

The first thing I would do is try to reset the PMU by connecting to AC without the battery installed, and holding the power button in for ten seconds. You should get a tone, and then see the sleep light flicker. I would also remove the Airport and extended RAM before doing this, just to simplify the situation.

Screen showed no signs of lighting up. Per owner, replacement AC adapter was tested, with no change in symptom. When I put this together again, I'll try a new DC-in.

Get your system install disk and insert it part way. Restart and push the CD in then immediately hold down the "C" key and tell me what happened.

This is my friend's Mac, and came to me without system CD. First priority was to remove the drive and retrieve the data, if possible, so I took the unit apart to remove the drive and connect it to an external case.

What would have been the possible results from your test, Mayer?

Hi, Mayer

Once I got the critical data off the drive, and put the system back together, I did the test as you described above. There was no chime, the fan did start up, the CD seemed hesitant and finally pushed the disk back out. No light on the screen; AC power light stayed green. On the plus side, the IFixit online guide was very complete and easy to follow, and I had no difficulty following it to take the iMac apart and get it back together.

On the down side, it still doesn't boot.
