My wife has an iPhone 4. Sometimes when she's trying to go back to the home screen, the home button doesn't work. She has to bang the phone on her knee a couple of times to get it to work.
Could this be the contacts inside?

It is possible there is a connection problem. I would also check to see if her phone is updated to the most recent software version.
Sometimes a software update will fix an erratic home button.

Fixed the problem! Plugged in the USB to the phone and lifted up. Great tip by one of the iFixit users!
