Power supply replacement iMac 2008 24' inch

My iMac 2008 24 inch died recently. I took it apart and found that many of the capacitors on the power supply was puffed up, and one had a brownish residue on top of it. Where can I get a replacemet part? Can I use a powersupply from a 2008 20’ inch iMac?

It will take some effort to locate one at a reasonable price and has the newer caps. Search for the Apple Part number 661-4478. Many suppliers want you to return the old supply so they can repair it. This is a 250w Power Supply

The other direction if you’re up to it is just replace the caps your self I can only find the G5 kit but many of the caps are the same Witonics Capacitor Replacement Kit for Apple iMac G5 Power Supply 20 Inch

FYI - Capacitor plague

As far as using a 20” power supply they are physically different! And is only a 180w so it’s not as powerful.

Here’s the iFixit parts to compare:

OP, @danj is right with this - due to capacitor plague, you're usually better off DIYing it with a complete set of Nippon Chemicon or Nichicon caps. It's going to take a lot longer, but you know it'll be good for the same cost or less.

I've had to dump hardware that just isn't worth investigating from this era when it began to act up. I technically could fix it, but the cost to do so vs. getting modern equivalents doesn't always add up. Not 100% related, but I had a Scanjet G4050 in service for years until I started to notice green alignment issues that went well past margin of error. I suspect failing caps, but with LED scanners being mature and plentiful, I couldn't justify the repair. My replacement Epson scanner runs circles around it.

Thank's for the quick answers! Can i get these kind of capacitors in my local electronics store, or are they some kind of special parts?

@János Luff - Sure a good local supplier can set you up with what you need. The tricky part is reading off the values on each cap and its dimensions.

Don't forget to score and accept the answer - if you're set - Thanks!
