iPod won't charge or sync with iTunes but plays music

Hi, My problem is that my Ipod classic 80 gig plays music thats on it but won't charge or sync with iTunes. I've tried to reset but that doesn't work.(menu & center buttons) When I do plug it in to a charger or iTunes it lights up as if it is recognized but won't sync or show the charge symbol. The one thing i did do a few days ago was accidentally plug it into a usb that was not for an ipod and the apple logo appeared. I can't remember the brand. Sanos? It plays through the headphone jack. I am wondering if I damaged the usb connector. I saw another post about the port being replacable but was wondering if i'll lose all my music?

Thanks Lew

LEW, the port is definitely not easily replaced. It is soldered on the logic board and unless you have plenty of practice with soldering very small pieces, and all the right tools, I would not recommend it. It is possible that you have shortened part of the logic board with the other charger. Place your iPod in disk mode and see if you can copy all the files to your computer so as in not to lose your songs. Try this plug in your Ipod and put it in Disk Mode: Reset by holding Menu/Middle buttons, then hold Middle/Play until disk mode appears. this can be a little tricky and you may have to try a couple of times. Check on youtube for a couple of good videos on how to do it.

Leave it plugged in.

1- Go to Control Panel

2- Open "System"

3- Click "Hardware" tab and click "Device Manager"

4- Find and maximize "Universal Serial Bus controllers"

5- Right click "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver". Click "Uninstall" (If it's not installed, get it with Itunes.)

6- If it doesn't all work out right there, unplug, replug you Ipod and you should be good. Of course open iTunes as well. If none of the above works, I would consider to replace the logic board. Good Luck and I hope this helps.
