USB C has no output

Just tried to ask this question before but it hasn’t shown up on the forum.

Replaced RAM last year with the ifixit guide. All went well but just tried to use usb c for the first time - no power. Have I unplugged something to cause this? what’s the steps to remedy. Yes ive turned it of and unplugged to reboot the SMC thing.

Update (10/21/2021)

Sorry its a Mac Intel 2019. The USB ports have power, never lost it.The USB C ports have no power. I do not know if they’ve never had power or if they lost it during the process of me sticking more ram in. I had never plugged anything into them until a couple days ago. The SD card reader works. Have not use the square port on the right.

Cheers!

Thank you. Good to learn another tool! (happy pulling things apart, inexperienced at pressing buttons).

It came up with zero issues found. Still no power out of USB Cs. Still power coming out of USBs beside them.

Whats my next step?

@traviscarter - I'm confused! Some of the ports are working? How about posting a picture of the ports and mark it with when ports are not working.

@traviscarter don't tear things apart before checking what Apple says about the USB-C issues. USB C And Thunderbolt Connectivity Issues

I would start off running the onboard diagnostics. Restart your system and press the D key, did you get any errors?

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

Update (10/22/2021)

OK, So only the Thunderbolt ports (USB-C connections) don’t appear to have power.

I would make sure using a USB-C power meter like USB-C Power Meter

If you’ve already done that the ports power logic is a small chip (Intel JHL6540 Thunderbolt 3 controller) just above the ports on the logic board did you have a problem taking the logic board out?

I don't think I did have any issues. But also it was only the 2nd time ive ever delved into a computer! Im not completely sure what a thunderbolt controller is. Is it part of the whole logic board?

I don't have access to a power meter, but reading the connectivity issues manual @oldturkey03 recommended, I may have to go back in just in case its a simple re plug something in job.

Or I guess the other way about it is to just get a usb to hdmi adapter. Or will it significantly reduce the ability of the hdmi and have the 2nd screen not clear?

@traviscarter - Maybe its time to seek out someone with micro soldering skills who can fix your logic board otherwise your only other option is replacing it.

I had a friend with a similar problem and I think it’s a known problem for Apple so I’d contact them and ask them about a repair - I hope it’s still under warranty. My friend only discovered the problem just after the end of the first year of ownership and Apple fixed it for him for free. Good luck
