Technically if your phone boots successfully, it is not, by definition, "bricked". A bricked device is just that, a brick. Good for holding down papers, or holding up houses, and not much else.

Please be more detailed with your information. What carrier? What do you mean by no service? Any diagnostic messages? What did you do to cause this?

If you are on bb 6.15.00 (iPad baseband) because you need unlock, Ultrasn0w the unlock software does not work with iOS 5.0.1. You will need to downgrade to use Ultrasn0w. There are some users who have bricked newer 3GS with Toshiba Baseband Chips when downgrading back to iOS 4. Read about this before proceeding.

Do follow brad's advice! I did a Jb second day it was released and have had unbelievable problems with upgrade/downgrade etc. Best advice if you end up "bricked" is just keep trying restore/dfu modes . I'm on a mac and resorted to "Sudo nand" file in terminal so many times I lost count! And it's still not unlocked yet.. Brad if you could put a link on that'd be awesome!

Try restoring down to iOS 4.1. Apple is still signing for that OS for some reason. From there you can jailbreak it. Email me if you have issues Polly, I went through the headache last week restoring a few phones.
