Mid '09,won't boot off HD or OSX DVD

Has booted twice from DVD, once locked at language selection screen, 2nd time made thru language select screen, then "gathering" HD info and stopped. Left it searching over night. Now it won't boot from DVD. Used C key on startup, D key on startup, Option key on startup and Shift key. Comes up with apple logo, spinning wheel below, optical drive spins up, reads from DVD, can hear the chatter of the read head, then after about 2 minutes, DVD spins down to a stop and nothing more happens. Apple logo still on screen with spinning wheel below frozen. Have reset PRAM and/or NVRAM. Seems to get very warm on the bottom left rear of the case.? When booting with the Option key pressed, it does come up with the OSX DVD select option on the screen, I select it, it starts reading the DVD, then it comes up with the apple logo and spinning wheel, reads a little more from the DVD, spinning wheel freezes, DVD then spins down and "nothing".

Chosen Solution

Remove the hard drive and see if it will boot OK from just the DVD. If so, replace the hard drive. Here's how: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2009 Hard Drive Replacement

Yep, it now boots from OSX dvd. Time to shop for a new hard drive.

Thankfully I did a Time Machine backup about 2 days before it died. 1 more question Mayer, should I get a SS drive for this machine? I worry about dependability and longevity.

Thank You Mayer
