Lid angle cable cut: Can I replace it? Can it work without it?

Hi all!

I am looking into joining the “repair rather than buy new” community and I have my eye on a 2019 macbook pro 16 inch. I have one with broken display and one with no motherboard and I’m hoping I can transplant the display from the latter on the former :)

My issue is that the people who destroyed the motherboard (was a corporate machine so I was told they had to shred it) also seemed to have cut both the main display ribbon as well as the lid angle connector. The display ribbon should come from the main machine, but I am concerned about the lid angle connector. It is clearly cut from the display.

  • Can I disconnect the ribbon from the broken display and replace the cut one?
  • Can the machine function without it connected? Worse case scenario,I’ll have to push a button to wake the machine up, but that’s a small price to pay if I can use that argument to significantly lower the price :)

Let me know what you think and thanks ! :)

The cable you are pointing to is the Hall Sensor unit which allows the system to know when the display lid is open or closed. Here’s a better view of things jump to Step 13 MacBook Pro 16" 2019 Teardown and here Apple Put a Hinge Sensor in the 16″ MacBook Pro. What Could It Be For? Here’s the needed part 16” MacBook Pro Lid Angle Sensor, Apple P/N 661-14647

Be aware the logic board you use here needs to have its TouchID button transferred with it as the two are married!

Yep,

I saw the display repair guide, but I should have also looked at the full teardown. That step 13 is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks a lot! :)

If I transfer the display to the main unit, with motherboard/keyboard/touchID then I don’t transfer the touch ID button.

The big unknown was: Can I also transplant the working cable from the “no motherboard” unit to the “no display” one. and you answered it :)

I guess I’m going to pull the trigger! I’m hoping to get the display unit for £200-250 and get the rest of the laptop for £3/400 (It’s for sale now at £700 but there is no way anyone is buying it at that price). If I add the iFixit toolkit and some shipping costs, that should put the machine at around £700. Not too bad :)

Thanks a lot
