Why is my backlight not working?

I have a refurbished MacBook 2.4 core 2 doe which was purchased from Apple in August of 2008. just recently the backlight will just go out out. The problem is not with the screen (the desktop is still visible if looked at from an angle). Using a mini DVI adapter I can hook it up to an external monitor and the computer still functions. Any clues as to what I should do next? Thanks in advance.

So you have a lightning issue that could be related to the inverter cable, inverter board or backlight fluorescent bulb. Any change in the screen lightning if you move the lid up and down ? Are the MB hinges stiff ? Never dropped the machine ?

You may use the iFixit manual for your MacBook and take off the top case to check the inverter cable connection on the logic board.

The fact that u can see a faint image and hat your external display works is great news, because that excludes a bad logic board. It sounds like your inverter cable can be damaged.

Follow this guide:

MacBook Core 2 Duo Display Replacement

Check your inverter cable for any kinks or slight tears.

I'm having the same issue. I replaced the inverter board and cable, and it's still behaving the same way. The screen will function normally for the first minute or so after powering on, and then the backlight will go out.

I'm not sure what to do now, but since I'm able to connect it no problem to an external monitor, and I know the inverter board and cable are both good, should I go ahead and replace the LCD? Are there ANY other possibilities?

I would check with a known working inverter board (if the one you bought is a used one) cause the other culprit can only be the logic board. The LCD panel itself has nothing to do with the lightning except for the backlight lamp but yours seems to work OK.

I just wanted to follow up with my issue. I replaced the LCD screen and now it's working like new. I'm not sure what made the screen behave that way (backlight going out after 2 mins of use and staying off), but either way, it wasn't an inverter board issue for me.

I got the new LCD screen on ebay. They tend to run around 100 bucks new from third-party manufacturers.
