Powered up, stuck with apple on screen?

I purchased this computer from someone, it worked fine for 2 days. I shut it down last night, properly. I'm a new Mac user. I clicked on the little apple in the upper left-hand desktop screen and chose shut down. Now, when I turn it on, it just has the big apple in the centre of the screen and won't do anything.
