New superdrive install causing problems

I recently installed a new superdrive in my iMac and now discs will not mount. When I insert a CD or DVD the drive powers up and the discs show up in disc utility, but they never actually initialize. I am currently updated on all my software (10.5.8 and all software up to date), and the drive seems to be working mechanically, so I am stumped. HELP!

Thats a strange issue, if you can read them on the disk utility. Try booting from the mac os installation disk, by booting and holding "C" if it will boot off of the disk, then there is a problem with the operating system. if it won't boot off of the disk, then there may be a problem with the optical disc drive, open disk utility and select "Verify Disk" under the optical drive, if there is an error, then the drive is almost certianly bad.

I just replaced my u-85j-c with your recommended u-875S, when inserting cd it wont grab it unless i push it in and then it wont mount and after that as it tries to eject, it just goes thru the cycle without ejecting unless i put a credit card in and help it eject. Any ideas?

My first idea is: start a new question, it makes it easier to handle - everything else would led to misunderstandings
