Upgrading from core duo to core 2 duo: which cpu to get?

Hey guys,

I have been looking to upgrade the processor in my imac since lion came out but im not sure which intel model i need.

My system profiler on my imac shows the following:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac4,1

Processor Name: Intel Core Duo

Processor Speed: 2 GHz

Number Of Processors: 1

Total Number Of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 2 MB

Memory: 2 GB

Bus Speed: 667 MHz

Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B08

Which core 2 duo cpu do i need in order to successfully upgrade my imac? Im happy with a 2.16Ghz core 2 duo cpu, i dont know if i can get a higher cpu for my imac?

I have seen some members who have upgraded their imac to a core to duo but i didn't see which c2d cpu was used.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Cellers - Please look over my links, your information is not correct as I have done it. BTW I've tried without success to download the Beta 8 times without success to solve the install problem on the Core Duo processor.

mayer you have also said that you have not got a stable running install of 10.7 Lion, in a comment that you have since erased here: Installing 10.7 onto a CoreDuo MacBook

I got the first retail version of 10.7 to install on an 1.83 Core Duo to a 2.16 Core 2 Duo CPU upgraded 17" iMac.

I used the retail version of Lion as I didn't have the Beta.

The 2.16 GHz is a T7400, M socket. You can probably take it to a 2.4 GHz T7600, M socket.

Thanks for the replys, i have found the t7600 c2d 2.33ghz cpu, it has the same 667mhz fsb as my current one so it should work

Hi to everybody.

I'm new on this forum, but I tried this site very helpful! Thanks to your guides, I could make many works on my Macs.

About your question I could say that: the T7400 processor (2,16 Ghz) could be firstly replaced by a T7600. Infact, Apple itself selled upgraded iMac with T7600 instead of T7400.

But I have a further question: is possible the substitution of the T7400 or T7600 with a more powerful processor (a same family processor, a Merom mobile processor, obvious!). How I can try a table, a list, with compatibility of various models of processors?

For example, I examine the list on Wikipedia, but I think it's not sufficient: Apple community support is very incompetent, unqualified (they repeat that the cpu is soldered on motherboard, for example, and nobody could replace a cpu. Only to buy a new mac is the option).

In general, I would be interested to know a "place", a website or something to control a list of compatible cpu upgrades, not only for a specific cpu (or pc) model.

Many thanks for your work!

Best regards!
