What is wrong with it, and what is needed to fix it

I accidently dropped my ipod on the polished cement while trying to throw a marker at my brother because he was throwing them at me but i dropped it on the cement face down no case, but has plastic protective covering by zag. i'm not positive but i think that when i dropped it it bounced and hit the ground 2 or 3 times when i picked it up the glass is horribly cracked (everyone i've talked to said that thats the worst one they've seen). now when i turn it on with the center button or the power button it turns on but the slide to unlock screen I cannot slide it to get into it or shut the power off (the touchscreen doesn't work), I seen that you guys had a front panel for the ipod touch but I dont know if it will fix the problem. what is wrong with my ipod? will this front panel fix it? if no is there a part that will fix it or a way that will. if yes will this be worth it and also i dont know if it is a 2nd or 3rd gen ipod how do you tell? and what is all the stuff i will need to fix this and will this be very hard thanks in advance you have helped much:)

I think you should talk with you parents or adult about this repair. I hope I don't upset you by assuming from your question and comments that you're in school? They may be able to help you do the repair or find someone who can do it for you. Oldturkey gives great advice :-)

The number one thing that you want to concentrate on, is the obviously broken part. In your case, the front panel. do not worry about what else is , or might be broken. You can reevaluate that later. To get the appropriate guide, you need to identify your iPod. On the back of your ipod, on the center bottom, you should see a number or model. "The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318." http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1353#ipodt... has more information on identifying your ipod. You can also get the information through iTunes, if it is still recognized. The replacing of the front panel is not easy, but the guides are available, and with proper technique and studying the guides, it can be accomplished. Let us know the model, and we will all try to further assist you. (and no more fighting with your brother:-)

thank you my ipod is jailbroken does that change anyhting and i found it was 2nd gen could i possibly send my ipod in because somene said that i need to sotter it and i do not own a sottering gun thanks and if i do this will i lose my information in the process of changing this

The jailbreaking will not matter for the front panel. Not sure what somebody is telling you about solder, but it will not be necessary for the replacement of the front panel. If you are not sure about doing this repair yourself, there are plenty of good reputable companies out there. Just do a Google search and you will find plenty of national companies that offer repair service. Good Luck.

thanks :) umm will i lose information on ipod and jailbrake as i change it and do i need to buy the plastic peices or can i just use a screwdriver and if i change it what is the chance that it works

When you say the plastic pieces, are you referring to the tools to open the iPod? Most of the places that will sell you the front panel will also supply the tools. Sorry, screwdriver won't work. Do a search on ifixit and I believe that some people use guitar picks, credit cards and fingernails to open the ipod:-) Your chances are actually pretty good in getting it fixed, just take your time be organized, read the guides a few times before you disassemble it, understand what you are reading and look at the pictures. Take your time, and just in case I have not said it, be organized. There are two places that I would look at if you want somebody else to do the repair for you, www.repairsuniverse.com and http://www.missionrepair.com check those sites, look at the prices and see how much it will be if they repair it. That will give you an idea of price and what you are looking at $$$. Is it worth it? How much are you willing to spend on a new iPod? :-) Hope this helps.

plastic peices to open ipod. ok thanks i want to get it fixed but the part on ifixit is 70 $ would it just be smarter to buy a new one
