Operating system won't download

Just put in a new hard drive in my MacBook pro. The hard drive is a 500GB 5400 RPM western Digital SATA. I went to install Mac OS X that came with the computer initially, and wheni select englishas my language, a pop up states it cannot not be installed on this computer. So I'm wondering if I screwed up the hard drive install, or if I need togo buy another Mac OS install disc.

Thanks!!

If the copy of OS 10 you have came with the computer I would ask if you partitioned and formatted the drive before installing the OS? I can't be to specific about formatting because I don't know which Mac you have. PPC and Intel Macs need to be formatted for their CPU. I am including a link to Apples instructions on restoring your OS. Good luck.
