New hard drive. Can't install OS

Installed a new hard drive. Formatted new hard drive but I still get a message that "OSX can't be installed on this computer"

I ran memtest OK

I ran repair OK

I ran verify OK

Drive is partitioned and shows up in disk utility but does not appear on reboot.

Is this like windows. Can only the DVD that was supplied with the machine work? I do not have the orig. OS DVD.

A new OS is on the way from the apple store but I'm afraid it won't install.

If you orfered the original installation disk from Apple, it should be just fine. Gray disks from other machines will not work. For you highest system we need to know the last three figures of your serial number, (located in the battery compartment) on the back of the keyboard.
