CPU fastening screw size and source?

Hi all,

Performed a CPU upgrade on my 20 inch 2210 iMac from 2.4GHz to 3.06GHz recently, which was cool.

I broke 2 of the screws that fasten the heatsink to the CPU on my iMac. There are 4 spring-loaded phillips screws on the top of the board and four 7.5mm T10 screws on the bottom. The ones I broke are on the bottom. The heads of the screws came clean off! The iMac runs a bit hot as a result.

Can anyone tell me if there are any more specifications for these kinds of screws? I've heard screw sizes being M1.4 and M2.6 and I have no idea what these mean or which one would be right for me.

Also, does anyone know of a good source for buying these kinds of screws online?

My experience is that if these screws are not all in place or the incorrect ones the machine will not even boot. Maybe you can get a dead board on eBay. Or Google for them.

Hmm, strange. It booted fine but the temps are much higher than before.

The heatsink is not quite compressed all the way i.e. there's a gap between the board and the heatsink itself. It's only held down by 2 screws.

I just dont really wanna take the Mac apart again until I know I have everything I need.

hello, i own an iMac 2008 2,66 Ghz and i'm interesting into upgrading my cpu to 3,06 as you did. But there is no guide about it. Is the CPU socketed or soldered ? Which one did you buy and how much was it ? Does it worth it ?

It is socketed and was simply a matter of "out with the old and in with the new" There are a few photos here:

(I think this album is public so you should be able to view the photos fine).

I followed iFixit's logic board replacement guide and then improvised from there.

Performance is definitely improved.

Bear in mind, I had a 2.4 so 3.06/2.4 = 27.5% improvement.

For you with a 2.6, you'd get 3.06/2.66 = 15% improvement.

Gday mate, nice to see an aussie around here. Thanks a lot for the reply, i wasn't sure wether it was socketed or not so the only way to know was to ask directly someone who has the exact same model, i didn't want to teardown everything and not be able to change it. Well i found one in Canada for a little less Ebay. Yeah it's a smaller improvement, I'll have to think about it because I just upgraded the RAM to 4+1GB. What are you going to do with the old one ? Do you think I'll be able to sell it for $40 or $50 ? That'll definitely help me to take a decision :)

Yeah I havent decided on what to do with the old one. You could always put it on eBay but it may or may not sell. Either way, it's a fun project. Just make sure you follow the steps closely, have the right tools and you have some thermal paste to use on the new CPU :)

Ok, I think I'll go for it, I'll buy it soon. My iMac is in Paris and I'm currently in Canada until end of december. The thing is that it only cost CA$100 here whereas it costs about 150€ so CA$200 in France.

Yeah I'll follow the steps carefully, I've already dissemble a Macbook Pro to apply thermal paste but iMac seems much more difficult. Specially the glass. I have to find Torx and suction cups. I'll keep you in touch when I'll do it probably in January if you don't mind. Anyway thanks for the advices !

Oh and by the way, did you have any heating problem ? I mean the heatsink of the iMac 20" is not designed for a 3.06GHz cpu, does that matter ? Did you monitor your temperature ?
