What do I need to fix an iPhone that wont charge?

My charging cable got dislodged and I think it caused a short. I didnt notice for 30 mins or so and the lower section of my iPhone got very very hot.

The rest of the phone seems to be working, but now it won't take a charge.

With a short, any number of things could of broke, but

I am wondering if anyone has had this issue and whether or not you think I should shell out the $50 to replace the connector card or just to buy a iPhone 4S.

I'd probably go for a dock connector (charging port and antenna/mic/speaker) shop around and compare prices/returns policy. It'd be cheaper than 4s. If that doesn't work and you want an upgrade, sell the 3GS and get some money back. If it does fix your problem then great, and you get more resale value! The guide is linked under the photo under the photo to the right.
