Why is a Drive Enclosure needed for adding a Hard Drive?

I am wanting to add an additional 500 GB 2.5 inch HD to my Macbook while also cloning my OS. Not being overly "tech" savvy, it just seems that having to purchase and temporarily use a HD enclosure is a waste of money?

Is there anyway around this?

Thank you

Get this adapter, use it and then sell it on eBay: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech...

First of all, are you sure your laptop can work with a half terabyte hard drive? I recall one post where he put in such a drive into his Macbook and it couldn't be detected.

If you are sure it will work, one other way is to borrow another Macbook and connect it to your Mac with a Firewire400 cable. Run it in Target Mode. (Press T immediately after you power up and keep it pressed until after the welcome chime sounds off.) It will now appear to be just another external hard disk to your Mac. Clone your current hard drive onto that drive, then transplant it into your machine.
