If you end up on eBay searching for one, the main thing to keep in mind is that you need a 2.5" standard ATA (also called IDE) hard drive, as opposed to a SATA (serial ATA) hard drive. Physically, they look the same, except the standard ATA drives have two rows of pins, whereas SATA drives have a connector similar to old game cartridges.

Any 2.5" ATA drive that is 9.5mm thick (Almost all 2.5" drives are) will do. This computer doesn't have "Large Drive Support" meaning that it will work with any hard drive that is partitioned smaller than 128GB. This shouldn't be a problem, though. Just look for a drive less than or equal to 120GB, or what you said, 40GB

According to the guide, you can use a 120 GB 5400 RPM Seagate (though i suppose other makes would work) ATA Hard Drive. iFixit doesn't stock this, but you can find almost every type of hard drive all over the internet.
