im having trouble restoring my iPod classic.

my ipod is a 4th generation (photo) model. i am trying to restore the ipod, but it told me to hook it up to a regular power outlet after it "restored" it on the computer. now ive checked on apples site, ive looked around online, but no one seems to know how long it has to stay on the ac charger or if thats what your really supposed to do. so i was just woundering if this site could tell me or help me find out, thanks for your time!

The only time I have had a similar message come up it was when the iPod was very low on power and I put it on a charger for about three hours and came back and tried it again. It failed because my battery was dead but I think if your battery isn't dead two to three hours should be enough to get enough of a charge to restore.

you never clarified the model of the iPod. If you have anything before the 5th gen you HAVE TO HAVE a firewire adapter in order to complete restoration. It will tell you to plug it in the AC Wall adapter but HAS TO HAVE firewire connection. It will not finish the restore until you do so.

Ok it is a 4th generation. So what is the firewire adapter? The actual adapter by apple?

Since it is a fourth generation it definitely will require a firewire wall adapter to restore. It will NOT restore through USB! You can get those of ebay and many other places. What you are looking for is something like that http://www.amazon.com/Apple-FireWire-Pow...

Ok thank you so much I'm going to get one and see if works!! Thanks!

You are welcome....once you plug it into the firewire it'll restore without a problem:-)

Ive been fixing a ipod photo this week. I read somewhere that USB supplies 5V where as firewire supplies 15. I dont own any firewire cables or even have the port on my computer anymore so I looked at buying a firewire charger, its quite hard to buy these cheaply now.

There is another solution though you dont need a firewire cable you just need the wattage. My ipad air uses a 12w charger which is rated to work with all iphone and ipods from 4th gen onwards. I was a little surprised but it booted up immediately.

I understand this is very old but ding what you said above finished the restoration process? I have an iPod 4th gen and need to finish it by plugging it in through a power adaptor ACD wasn't sure if I needed the FireWire or a proper USB would work if it was the right voltage?

*doing *and.

USB works fine for syncing, you do need a higher amperage ipad charger(2.5 amps) for charging as a standard 5w(1 amp) iphone one doesnt work and neither does a standard usb 2.0 port(0.5amps) or usb 3.0(0.9amps)
