How to transfer info from old hard drive to new one

My Macbook hard drive was limited to 80G so I bought a new one and saved all the all info on the old one. I am unable to get the original info transferred to the new hard drive using a usb cable between the source and laptop

You're problem is a bit unclear. Are you saying you transferred your old files to an external hard drive but now you can't get the files from the external to your new internal hard drive?

yes that is what I meant. I would like to transfer all my old files to the new internal drive from the external drive where they are all saved.

Options

Restart with your external drive plugged in. Go to Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant and select the type of files you want to move and do it.
